Yarn explained
Yarn decides how a towel feels, how much it sheds and how long it lasts. Two towels with the same GSM can use very different yarn.
- Carded
- Cotton fibres cleaned and aligned. Good value; slightly more lint and a less smooth feel.
- Combed
- An extra step removes short fibres. Smoother, stronger, less lint. Costs more.
- Ring-spun
- Fibres twisted tightly into a fine, strong yarn. Soft and durable.
- Open-end (OE)
- Faster, cheaper spinning. Bulkier and rougher; more lint. Fine for budget and promotional ranges.
- Compact
- A refined ring-spinning method with less hairiness. Smooth and strong.
- Zero-twist
- Pile yarn with almost no twist. Very soft and quick to absorb; needs good construction to avoid lint.
- Count (Ne)
- Yarn fineness. A higher number is finer: 16s is finer than 10s. Towels usually use 10s–20s in the pile.
- Ply
- Single yarn, or two yarns twisted together (2-ply, written 16s/2). Ply adds strength and durability.
Cotton and blends
| Composition | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 100% cotton | Most retail, Amazon, hotels | Best absorbency and feel |
| 60% cotton / 40% polyester | Price-driven ranges, some institutional use | Lower cost, quicker drying, less absorbent |
| 55% cotton / 45% polyester | Institutional blankets and cloths | Durable and cheap; feels less natural |
| Cotton-linen union | Premium tea towels and glass cloths | Low lint, fast drying, higher price |
We always state the exact blend on the quote. Claims like "organic" or "recycled" need certification, which we arrange on request.
GSM and weight
GSM is grams per square metre of fabric. Heavier usually means thicker and more absorbent, but GSM alone doesn't tell you quality: yarn and finish matter as much.
Worked example: a 70 × 140 cm bath towel is 0.98 m². At 500 GSM it weighs about 0.98 × 500 = 490 g.
| GSM | Feels | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 300–400 | Light, quick-drying | Gym, beach, budget |
| 400–550 | Everyday soft | Retail, Amazon, 3–4 star hotels |
| 550–700 | Thick, plush | Premium retail, spas, 5-star hotels |

Weaves and constructions
- Terry
- Loops on both sides; the standard towel construction.
- Dobby border
- A woven flat band near the ends; identifies hotel and retail ranges.
- Jacquard
- Patterns or logos woven into the fabric.
- Waffle
- A grid texture; light, fast-drying, popular for kitchen and spa towels.
- Huck
- Honeycomb texture; low lint; used for glass cloths.
- Plain, twill, herringbone
- Flat weaves for tea towels, aprons and table linen; twill and herringbone are stronger and drape better.
Colourfastness
Colourfastness is graded 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). For towels and kitchen textiles we target grade 4 for washing.
- Washing (ISO 105-C06): fading and bleeding in the wash
- Rubbing (ISO 105-X12): colour transferring to other things
- Light (ISO 105-B02): fading in sunlight
- Bleach and peroxide: spots from bleach or skin creams
